This isn't so much meant to be a discussion thread so much as a place
to gather words that don't yet exist in Solresol. Once we figure out
how to incorporate new words into Solresol (derive words from existing
Solresol words, just assigning definitions to "empty" Solresol words,
or some other method) we can start to incorporate words from this
list.
So:
1) computer
2) email
3) television

This is a brainstorm that I'm not checking, but I'm pretty sure about:
Laser
Atom
Molecule
Proton
Neutron
Electron
Helicopter
Cell phone
Digital (derived from "digit" or number?)
Virtual
Internet
DNA
X-ray
Ultraviolet
Radio (wave)
I'm sure there's lots more :)
We actually have LOTS of empty words though, as far as I can tell. I haven't
done tons of looking, but I think there are. I would suggest that once we
start doing this, we put a lot of logic and categorization into it, maybe
more so than Sudre did himself.

I am trying to translate some simple books and ran into a problem while translating The Cat In The Hat. There is no word for hat or even any synonyms that I can find

Welcome to Sidosi, Collin! Glad to have you.

Try 'remidosol' - hat, cap, hood, bonnet.

Translating texts is probably the best way we'll get a list of words we need to define, though. That's cool that you're doing that! You should share some of your translations sometime! :)

P.S.
Of course I'm not sure what you're using to look up words, but your best options are Dan's translator on this website (http://www.sidosi.org/translator) or the spreadsheet document that the translator is based on (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc ... KT2c#gid=0)

Grrr...Sudre made mistakes in his own work :/ This is why I run into problems when I try to translate things. I just checked the pdf looking for the word for "chapeau," and when I checked the list of French words, it gave "remidofa," but when I checked back up where the Solresol words are listed, it gives "remidosol," as Garrison says, so it's good the dictionary on the site is based on the Solresol words, because when you try to do things faster from French, the results are not always accurate (as I keep finding out >:{ ).

Yuck, that's incredibly annoying.
(I think we spend more of our time irritated with Sudre than we do 'honoring' him. Poor guy :P )

For "internet," we could just use "lasirela" (net, mesh, network, fishnet).
For "virtual," I think we would just use "midorere," which means the same as "virtual" in its original sense of "in effect, not not really." So we could also call the internet "lasirela midorere" (virtual net). We could also call it "lasirela mimiresol" (in-between net) or "lasirela mimirefa" (connective/connecting/connected net).
"Computer" would probably be "resisido larelami" (calculating/calculative machine). "E-mail" could be "fadomi solsilare" (electric/electronic mail).
I think "television" could be "domiremi fasidola" (distant vision). "Television set" could be "domiremi fasodola larelami" (distant vision machine). "Domiremi fasidola lasolfado" (distant vision show) could be "television program" or "television show."

Other terms that don't exist in Solresol:

Outer space
Satellite (artificial)
Spaceship
Space station
Black hole
Asteroid
Meteor
Nuclear
Renewable energy
Power plant
Dinosaur
Extinction

I can't seem to find a word for "sex," "mate," or "reproduce" (in its sexual connotation). We'd certainly need a word for that. (Actually, I guess there is a word for "Cause, engender, give rise to, generate, procreate, generative, genital." But that isn't very specific and when used in a sexual context only refers to reproduction.)

Um, also, there aren't words for "male" or "female." Which is a problem especially considering the only way to indicate gender is to specify that something is female...which is done with the same method as turning a word into an adverb. I really think we need specific words for those. We'd have to if we want any of the following words, or for them to be useful:

sexuality
gender
gay
lesbian
bisexual
